Combination therapy with 308-nm excimer laser, topical tacrolimus, and short-term systemic corticosteroids for the treatment of segmental vitiligo
Segmental vitiligo is characterised by a unilateral and localized distribution, early onset, and stable disease status after rapid progression. In addition to this, segmental vitiligo is often associated with poor response to various treatment modalities.
A retrospective study was conducted in an attempt to investigate the factors associated with response to treatment to assess the effectiveness of combination therapy with the use of the 308-nm excimer laser, topical tacrolimus, and short-term systemic corticosteroids.
A total number of 159 patients with segmental vitiligo participated in the study, who were receiving combination therapy for more than 3 months.
Based on the analysis of the results, the researchers concluded that this combination therapy is effective in cases of segmental vitiligo. More specifically, more than half of the patients that participated in this study had at least 75% repigmentation of the skin with the use of the combination therapy, after a median treatment duration of 12.1 months. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that combination therapy is not influenced by factors such as prolonged disease duration.
The effectiveness of 308-nm excimer laser is also confirmed based on the findings of a recent review, which was conducted by Alhowaish et al (2013). More specifically, data from research studies indicate that excimer laser is probably the treatment method of choice for segmental vitiligo as compared to other available treatment options. Treatment effectiveness may be further improved if excimer laser is used in combination with other treatment modalities, such as corticosteroids and tacrolimus.
