Removing unwanted hair using razors, creams, waxes and household appliances is a time consuming, costly and – above all – pointless process, since it does not solve the problem effectively. Laser gives the solution by removing the entire hair from the root.

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic services in all countries of the West. Since 1997 it is also approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and now it is the most appropriate and common method for permanent removal of unwanted hair.

It has the following advantages:

Accuracy: Based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, laser acts selectively on hair follicles, leaving surrounding tissues intact.

Speed: Each laser pulse lasts  only lasts fractions of a second, which are enough to target many hair follicles at the same time

Appropriate for all areas of the body: Contrary to traditional hair removal methods, laser can be adjusted depending on the type of hair and skin and eliminate effectively unwanted hair on any area of the body: face, hands, armpits, chest, nipples, back, bikini, legs.

Permanent results: Laser targets the hair follicle, which is the focal point of development, and following its application hair becomes weaker progressively, minimising its life cycle. After the initial treatment course your skin is softer like velvet. To maintain the result sessions are repeated at long intervals.

Painless method: The application of an anaesthetic cream on the areas being treated ensures that only a mild irritation occurs during the session.

Injuries are avoided: Laser hair removal is an absolutely safe method when applied by specialised medical personnel and it does not leave marks, scars or intense irritation, something that often happens with the use of razors and other home hair removal techniques.

Economically advantageous: When comparing total cost in terms of money and time of each hair removal method it is evident that Laser hair removal is the most advantageous. No other method ensures permanent hair removal; to the contrary, for most methods lots of time and most importantly expenses are needed to repeat the procedure, as well as to minimise pain, irritation and injuries usually occurring. Laser hair removal may become even more cost effective when different areas are combined in one treatment session.

Four key factors for successful hair removal

There are four key factors for safe and permanent removal of unwanted hair through the use of Lasers, all of which are met in our dermatology clinics:

  1. Selection of the right laser device

It has been demonstrated that safe permanent results are achieved through the use of specific wavelengths of the light beam of the laser. In particular the wavelength should be longer than 600nm and shorter than 1100nm, and can be achieved through Alexandrite and Nd:YAG Lasers. A complete programme for the removal of unwanted hair includes combinations of these two advanced Laser devices and it is always customised according to each individual’s type of hair and skin.

  1. Application in a dermatological clinic with great experience in hair removal

Although hair removal is mainly a cosmetic procedure, medical supervision is essential.

As any laser treatment there are certain contraindications for the application of laser for hair removal. More specifically, it cannot be applied on recently tanned skin. Apart from this it is very important to ensure that an experienced dermatologist examines the area to be treated in case there are moles, folliculitis or infected skin lesions.

  1. Skin scanning before the application

Before proceeding to the treatment, the skin is examined in detail so that to observe and record the particular characteristics of each individual’s hair and skin. This allows correct setting of the Laser parameters so that to avoid unnecessary repeat sessions.

  1. Specially trained medical personnel

To achieve permanent results safely, personnel should be specially trained so that to set the parameters according to specific factors: area under treatment, type of hair, possible effects of hormones in each area, individual’s age, use of drugs or another hereditary predisposition that may affect hair growth, etc.

Before the initiation of the treatment it is essential to get the medical history of each individual so that to decide on the personalised treatment programme depending on each case.

It should be clarified that the intervals between sessions are not fixed; they depend on the duration of the hair life cycle in each area of the body and for each individual. The results are visible from the first session, while the next one is usually scheduled after one month. Gradually, the interval between visits increases (six-eight months).

Before treatment initiation it is always essential to ask the patients’ medical history, to carry out a thorough examination of their skin and to specify a personalised treatment regimen, according to the special characteristics of each case.
