New data on the application of photodynamic therapy

DYO 1 page

Acne is a very common dermatological disease afflicting both adolescent and adult men and women with major psychological and social impact, as the scars are usually visible on the face. Another fact is that effective treatment of acne is not easy and remains a challenge for dermatologists worldwide.

There are numerous strategies for the control and treatment of moderate to severe acne and they vary considerably, from simple topically applied formulations to orally administered antibiotics or potent retinoid drugs. They have been widely used for decades with varying degrees of success, an indisputable fact, since the problem of acne has not been resolved effectively.

Apart from this it has been demonstrated that many pharmaceutical products cause various side effects or even lead to the development of tolerability of the organism, something that makes the ineffective. Finally, there is a large number of people who cannot or do not want to use oral medications and systematic treatment.

These include women who are or wish to become pregnant, people who do not show tolerance to orally administered medications, do not tolerate dryness of the lips or eyes, and people with liver or kidney diseases.

In addition to this, this group includes also people who exercise intensively or athletes, blood donors, patients with dyslipidemia, patients with inflammatory bowel disease and people suffering from depression or have often nosebleeds. Finally it can be used in children and adolescents to avoid the oral administration of pharmaceutical products.

All of the above mentioned reasons, in combination with the urgent need for effective treatment of acne in both adolescents and adults, have led to the exploration of new therapeutic approaches. Photodynamic therapy is here to provide an effective solution to these issues.

Photodynamic therapy action

To achieve clinical effect through this treatment method three key elements are necessary to initiate and maintain the effectiveness of the induced photodynamic therapy reaction:

  • Specific photosensitisers at the appropriate concentration and selectively distributed in the relevant anatomical areas
  • Light wavelengths that can be selectively absorbed by specific photosensitisers
  • Sufficient concentration of molecular oxygen in the tissues in which the photodynamic therapy is applied throughout the application.

In a recently published study, the conclusion was that photodynamic therapy constitutes a safe and effective alternative treatment strategy for the management of clinical manifestations of moderate to severe acne (Tzermias & Marini, 2015). The researchers highlight also the importance of fluorescence monitoring at the skin surface before, during and after the application of photodynamic therapy.

This protocol is an organised strategy of sequential treatment application. Essentially, the alternative application of blue and red light leads to the progressive penetration of light in a more uniform way to the target tissue at multiple skin layers, while enhancing the effect of photodynamic therapy. Moreover, it is important to note that the treatment was well tolerated by patients.

Therefore, photodynamic therapy with the application of photosensitiser and combined application of blue and red light can be considered as a safe and effective treatment method for acne management for all people, making the skin healthier, smoother and shinier.

If you are also among those people with acne that are tired of changing dermatologists in order to find an effective treatment for their problem, photodynamic therapy may be able to finally give you the desired clean and healthy face without spots or scars in an affordable price.
