PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY & GENITAL WARTS

Off 1

Photodynamic therapy with the application of a photosensitiser constitutes a safe and effective strategy for the treatment of condylomata acuminate (genital warts).

According to the results of a study that was published in April 2015, local application of a photosensitiser (5-aminolevulinic acid, 5-ALA) offers a particularly effective and safe method for the management of genital warts.

A total number of 531 patients with genital warts participated in the study and the clearance rate of lesions was significantly high. More specifically, it was observed that for greater lesions clearance rate reached 95.27%, while the corresponding percentage for smaller lesions was equally high (88.73%).

Some differentiation was also observed depending on the area the lesion was. Rate of clearance was highest in the urethral meatus as compared to the perianal area.

Therefore, the researchers concluded that local application of a photosensitiser and photodynamic therapy (PDT) can lead to effective management of genital warts without causing any adverse events.
